Mixed reactions
to $1m upgrade
MARTINE HALEY
LOCAL mayors have
given a mixed response
to a $1 million funding
pledge to resurface the
Wielangta Road linking
the East Coast and the
Tasman Peninsula.
The popular forest
drive connecting Orford
to Kellevie Road and
the Arthur Highway is
currently impassable for
vehicles other than fourwheel drives.
During the state election campaign, Premier
Peter Gutwein said the
Liberals would resurface
the road as part of its

municipality and

commitment to improve
tourism infrastructure.
The Mayor of Glamorgan-Spring Bay, Robert
Young, has campaigned
in support of extending
the Great Eastern Drive
along Wielangta Road.
“The Wielangta upgrade, when it comes
– hopefully doing the
worst pieces first – will
benefit Sorell municipality, Tasman municipality
and Glamorgan Spring
Bay,’’ Mr Young said.
“Tourists will be able
to travel east from the
north, then down south
along the East Coast vis-
iting all our attractions.
“From Scottsdale to St
Helens, Bicheno, Swansea, Triabunna, Orford,
Eagle Hawk Neck, Port
Arthur, ending up going
to Hobart via Sorell.
“Seeing our sights, wilderness, farms, dairies,
wineries, pristine forests,
sacred sites, and our convict heritage.
“It will be a win for us
all.
“For all the municipalities, all the businesses
and all the residents who
rely upon visitors for
their livelihood.’’
Tasman Mayor Kelly
Spaulding was lukewarm
in his response. “Look
it’s great that they have
made a commitment to
put $1 million towards
fixing the surface but
to me it’s nothing more
than maintenance,’’ Mr
Spaulding said.
“I understand that budgets can be tight but now
is not the time to stop
spending, now is the time
to make things happen.
“Fixing the issues
through Sorell and into
Hobart is heading in the
right direction but we
need to continue the improvements to include
access to and from the
East Coast.”

Hawks back
reading goal
THE popular Premier’s
Reading Challenge has
kicked off and students
on the East Coast, South
East and Peninsula areas
are being encouraged to
take part and read as often as possible during the
10-week program.
The Challenge is a
great way to encourage
children to read regularly
and, in turn, set them up
for the lifelong benefits
that reading brings.
This year marks Hawthorn Football Club’s
fifth year of involvement
in the Challenge.
The Tasmanian State
Manager for Hawthorn,
David Cox, said: “Reading is one of those building blocks of life that’s
so important in enabling
children to realise their
full potential.
“Hawthorn is proud to
shoulder some of the responsibility, and opportunity, to encourage and
excite kids to take up
reading.
“We’ve been part of
this community for 21
years, and we take our
role as an organisation
that can help improve
young Tasmanians’ lives
very seriously.”
The Education Department encourages all
Tasmanian students from
Prep to Grade 6 to take
part in the challenge, no
matter what their reading
level.
Parents are also encouraged to get involved.
The Premier’s Reading
Challenge runs to July 2.

New jewel in
Kings’ crown
JOSH HARRIS
A TASMANIA-based
business has ridden the wave
of COVID renovations and,
with a little government help,
unveiled its foundations for a
big future.
Kings Outdoor Living held
a celebratory opening for its
new warehouse and showroom
in Sorell last month, pulling
together family and workers,
politicians and the media
to exhibit the fruits of their
labour, and the groundwork
put in to maintain their
momentum.
King received a $303,250
grant under the Federal
Government’s Regional Jobs
and Investment Packages
program which, when matched
dollar-for-dollar by Kings,
enabled them to develop a
new display area, increase its
office and admin area and to
construct a new assembly and
storage facility.
Sam King was the host of the
large unveiling alongside his
brother Will, who welcomed
Sorell Mayor Kerry Vincent, as
well as Senator Clair Chandler,
Mark Shelton and John Tucker,
and was quick to put their
thanks forward to the team,
their community and to the
Federal Government.
“We were really lucky that
people decided to get their
travel budget and invest it into
their homes,” Mr King said.
Three years ago we were
working from home offices,
we made the purchase of this
property in 2017 and had been
building this site up in stages,
but as a result of the amount of
work we’ve had, we have seen
it fast-tracked.
“The demand went up and
we were very fortunate to be
one of the businesses to not
be effected too greatly by
COVID.”
Kings Outdoor Living
employs 13 staff from the local
area, including fourth-year
apprentice Connor Berry, who
has recently relocated and built
in the Sorell area, as well as
carpenter Alec Carnes, who
secured a full-time position as
a result of the Kings expansion
after his former employer went
out of business in late 2019.
