Cracking the cube
QUICK hands and quick minds will be on show at the
Speedcubing Australia State Championships this year,
held at the Sorell Hall over May 22 and 23.
In attendance will be world champion Felix Zemdegs, of ‘The Speedcubers’ Netflix
fame.
Mr Zemdegs, who some consider the best
speedcuber of all time, is known to solve a
rubix cube in under five seconds will be going up against Tasmania’s best.
Unfortunately because of COVID restrictions and the sheer number of competitors,
public attendance is unavailable, but those
interested are encouraged to head along to the
monthly meets, as well as get on to the Facebook page
to follow all the action.

LANDCARE Tasmania
hosted a field day in the
Coal Valley last month,
offering an opportunity
to hear about their latest
collaborations, as well as
learn about their region
from experts in the field.
Landcare
Tasmania acting CEO Peter
Stronach announced the
third round of Landcare
Action Grants, with the
Tasmanian Government
working in partnership to
deliver $2 million funding for the program.
Landcare
Tasmania
has entered into collaborations with 16 local
businesses properties and
11 community groups,
organisations and individuals to deliver the
project, which include 16
events and activities in
the Coal Valley alone.
The open day commenced with a display
by experienced cat management contractor John
Butler on how to properly use cat traps effectively and safely.
Mr Butler has operated in the North West for
over a decade as a specialist in his field, having

Tasmanian Land Conservancy was also on hand,
educating locals about
local species of weed,
including Serrated Tussock and Chilean Needle Grass, both of which
have sprung up in patches throughout the Coal
Valley.
After a trip to Ripple
Farm, home and project
of author Rachel Treasure, where she spoke
on her efforts to rejuvenate their farm in to a
showcase of holistic ag-
riculture. The event was
rounded out by Andrew
Doube, who was on hand
to educate attendees on
the benefits of dung beetles, as well shedding a
light on a new species
that was released in Tasmania, with the aim of
improving catchment nutrient management and
water quality.
The event was one of
many Outreach Events
run by Landcare Tasmania in 2021, leading up to
the Community Landcare
Conference in October.
