I OFTEN talk about how
we work with the Government and our other
elected representatives
like Rebecca White, and
the relationships we’ve
built with them.
I would like to think
the commitments given
during the recent state
election campaign are a
reflection of this work
and advocacy.
I appreciate all our local politicians and the
Premier taking a keen
interest in the infrastructure Sorell and the wider
south east region needs
to cater for our thriving
and growing community.
We as a community
truly appreciate what has
been committed to us.
These election commitments include:
AN additional $50 million towards upgrading
the Arthur Highway, including between the new
Sorell Southern bypass
and Port Arthur.
Steelwork goes up for Pembroke Park stadium.
THREE new paramedics for Dodges Ferry,
providing 24/7 paramedic coverage.
$2.5 MILLION to build
a new function centre at
Pembroke Park.
$1.5 MILLION to expand the Sorell Trade
Training Centre.
$400,000 for the Carlton
Park Surf Life Saving
Club to complete rede-
velopment.
$30,000 funding to the
South Eastern Basketball
Association to assist them
with getting a junior basketball team into the association.
Good news on the development of the new
Emergency Services Hub
in Sorell. Council recently approved the permit at
DASC and works are ex-
pected to commence by
the end of the year. I’m
pleased to see progress
on this project as it will
bring enormous benefits
for our community, and
enhanced services for the
wider south east region.
The redevelopment of
Sorell School has gone
out for tender. This project is very much needed
and has been a long time
coming so it’s great to
see some more progress.
Enhanced and upgraded
school infrastructure will
be of great benefit for
our teachers, parents and
students. I look forward
to being able to let you
know when construction
will commence in the
coming months.
I’ve had several people of late speak to me
regarding parking issues
in our community. Please
take note of posted parking limits and be respectful of local businesses
and other people in our
community by abiding
by these. We all want to
get a park as close to our
shopping destination as
possible.
If you require longer
parking or are working in
Sorell, please park in the
side streets or dedicated
car parks like Neil Davis
car park off Parsonage
Place. I appreciate your
support of this.
I recently met with
Federal Communications
Minister Paul Fletcher
to discuss the new satellite
communications
equipment installed at the
Sorell Memorial Hall.
During natural disasters, this community wifi point will provide full
internet access to local
residents who can’t safely
stay at home.
Once a telephone tower loses power, it only has
minimal operating time.
In a disaster-affected area
it can be a big challenge
to keep them operating.

her concession speech on
election night.
Following the election Ms White posted her
thanks on Facebook.
“I want to thank everyone who supported
the Labor party this election. Importantly I want
to recognise all the thousands of Tasmanians who
placed their faith in us
with their vote,” she said.
The projected make-up
of the House of Assembly
is 13 Liberal, nine Labor,
two Green and one independent. This would give
the Liberals the same narrow majority it had just
prior to calling the snap
election.

The independent would
most likely be Glenorchy
Mayor Kristie Johnston
who is ahead of Liberal
turned independent Sue
Hickey on primary votes.
Mr Gutwein has outlined his immediate priorities with a “100 Day Implementation Plan’’.
They include releasing
a new sitting schedule for
the resumption of Parliament, and schedule a new
legislative agenda to give
effect to:
• the new Foreign Investor Land Tax surcharge;
• land tax threshold
changes to better reflect
the property market and
provide immediate land
tax relief;
Dig talks

Arthur

services to take pressure
off the public hospital
system and work to put
arrangements in place by
June 30.
In the closing days of
the election, the Liberals
made specific promises
for the South East region
of Tasmania.
“We are the strongest
supporters of our regional communities and as
a Government we have
worked to support the
Sorell and South-East
region’s plans for economic growth and job
creation,’’ Mr Gutwein
said.
The

Arthur Highway.
This will include upgrades along the length
of the highway between
the connection with the
new Sorell Southern bypass and Port Arthur;
