Arthur looks ahead
MAY 2021 - 19
THE resilience of the people
of the Tasman Peninsula
was remembered at the 25th
anniversary of the Port Arthur
massacre.
On Wednesday April 28 people
gathered at the memorial to
remember the 35 killed and 23
wounded, the first responders and
all those impacted by the event.
Former premier and deputy chair
of the Port Arthur Historic Site
Michael Field paid homage to all
those people who showed bravery
to help in any way they could.
“All the health workers and the
police as well as the staff who were

on site,’’ Mr Field said.
“For many people a day doesn’t
go past without memories flooding
into their mind.
“Today is also a time to reflect
on what has happened since.
“The mass shootings were a
catalyst for change in Australia’s
gun laws that have resulted in
a reduction of gun deaths in
Australia.
“We should remember the
courage of the then prime minister
(John Howard) as well as the
political leaders of all political
parties that ensured the changes
in gun laws passed through the
Federal Parliament and authorised
the gun buyback scheme.
“These changes to gun
laws are now quoted by those
wanting change around the world
particularly in the US.”
Mr Field said the resilience of the
people of the Tasman Peninsula had
shone through in the last 25 years.
“The people have not let the
events of 1996 defeat them but the
Peninsula has gone from strength to
strength.
“More and more people are
moving here to live and we can
look forward to a prosperous
future.”
