Lambs back in numbers
A LARGER yarding of 1417
lambs at Powranna on Tuesday
included 1125 new season lambs.
There was a bit more weight
than last week but still the majority were under 18kg and sold to
very strong restocker competition.
The few trade lambs bought
to kill made $180 to $210 while
restockers paid $176 to $182 for
trade weights, $166 to $178 for
light trade (16-20kg), $158 to
$164 for light and $120 to $150
for very small (under 12kg). There
was a mixed yarding of old lambs
sold from $144 to $172/head.
There was also a larger yarding of 1085 mutton and, while
extra heavy sheep were $7
cheaper, most of the medium
weights improved $5 to $10/head.
Medium weights made $130 to
$174 and extra heavy (over 30 kg)
made $164 to $180/head.
There was a larger yarding of
just over 90 cattle with 70 per
cent being cows. Restockers and
feeders paid 450c to 476c/kg for
yearling steers and 436c to 458c/
kg for heifers. Butchers bought
grown steers and bullocks for 370c
to 434c/kg.
Although averages were a
few cents cheaper, all cows met
strong export competition with
heavy beef cows making 344c to
358c/kg, leaner dairy cows 254c
to 292c/kg and light cows 216c to
232c/kg liveweight.
Rains dampen
wheat market
FUTURES
FOCUS
Paul Willows
THE situation for grain
growers in NSW continues
to deteriorate with constant
and persistent rainfall causing significant downgrading of
quality and logistical issues.
NSW was likely to produce
12 million tons of wheat this
year.
Based upon rainfall
received and the current forecast it likely that around 50
per cent of the crop will be
downgraded to feed wheat.
So far most of Victoria and
South Australia has escaped
much of the heavy rainfall but
these crops are further behind
in their development.
As a result of the rainfall
prices for milling grade wheat
have continued to move higher
because the world is technically now short of wheat.
Feed wheat prices have
remained relatively stable
over the week mostly because
it is so cheap on the export
market.
Australian feed wheat is
