Nation in a herd
rebuilding phase
IT SEEMS that every week we
talk about more record prices in
the cattle yards and this week
is no different with the Eastern
states Young Cattle Indicator
pushing through 1100c/kg
last week and by Monday this
week had hit 1105c/kg carcass
weight.
As we have discussed for
many months this is being
driven by restockers and
feeders with the processing
sector only buying about 6.5
per cent of the total yardings
on Monday.
The biggest push has been
in Queensland and Northern
NSW saleyards where the rains
have been widespread and at
times disruptive to the supply
of livestock into the saleyards.
Feeders have been dominant
all year and in the September
quarter numbers of cattle on
feed were 10 per cent above
the five year average.
MARKET
TALK
Richard Bailey
At the market end, the
National Feeder Steer
Indicator recently broke
another record, hitting
546.93c/kg which is a rise of
124c/kg or 24 per cent over
the last 12 months.
MLA says tight supply as
the herd rebuild continues is
driving market conditions and
the over-the-hooks price to
it’s current levels.
Traditionally, the national
herd is considered to be in
a rebuild phase when the
female kill percentage drops
below 47 per cent.
The recent ABS data
indicates that the national
female slaughter rate is 44.4
per cent, reinforcing that
Australia is officially in a
herd re-build.
The low female slaughter
percentage also demonstrates
the shortage of female cattle
being sent for processing
and as a result we have seen
record chopper cow prices
over the past few months.
There were 1.6 million
cattle killed in the September
quarter this year which is the
most of any quarter which is
encouraging that there hasn’t
been a drop. Although it does
depend in which state you
live in.
The Victorian slaughter fell
17,000 for the quarter while
Queensland increased by over
90,000 for the same quarter.
On the store cattle scene,
there was a very big yarding
of 5300 at Mortlake (Western
Victoria) last week and agents
reported all prices improved
further to break more record.
They said that steer prices
were 30c to 60c/kg higher and
heifers 10c to 20c/kg better.
Some lightweight steers
were quoted over 800c/kg
liveweight while most of the
heavier feeder steers 550c/
kg plu.
Just as an example, one
producer from Hawkesdale
sold 264 steers and heifers
that averaged $2280 while
compared to last year he
averaged $1690 over 237 head.
His best pen of steers
weighed 329 kg and made
$2372 or 721c/kg and a heavier
pen made $2569 or 678c/kg
pen (378 kg).
With the season so good and
even more rain up north, these
store prices look like they are
here to stay for a month or two
but one would have to think
there is a top limit very close
by.
Good store cattle at Smithton
AT Smithton on Monday, agents offered 330 cattle
and 61 sheep.
The AWN Tasmanian and Elders sale was very
successful with good competition from processors
and restockers.
“It was a very successful sale,” Noel Hardstaff said.
In the prime cattle yarding bullocks made to $4.42,
cross bred steers and heifers to $3.50-$3.80. Heavy
beef cows topped at $3.42.
A good run of store cattle with well-bred yearling
off steers making $2000-$2540, while the better-bred
yearling steers made $1500-$2000.
Cross bred dairy cross and dairy yearling steers
made from $1180-$2000.
The better-bred yearling heifers making $16002000, cross bred heifers made from $1000-1500, the
bucket reared cross bred calves made from $500-910.
Beef bred cows and calves made $3050.
Prime lambs topped at $170 while mutton made
from $100-130.
The next sale is to be held on December 6 at
12.30pm.
A store sale coming up on Thursday, December 2
at 12.30pm.
The sale is expected to see an offering of 600 beefbred cattle, majority are steers, 580 steers, 30 heifers. 400 of these are Angus and all are Never Ever
accredited.
