Quality good at
last weaner sale
ON Wednesday night some of
the state received some follow-up rains but unfortunately
some didn’t.
Around Launceston it was
about 20mm, Scottsdale and
the North East between 20
and 40mm and yet around
Deloraine very little. I did hear
about 10 mm in the Midlands
but haven’t heard much from
anywhere else.
The lack of the follow-up
rains here and in Victoria,
South Australia and Southern
NSW is having a dramatic
effect on cattle markets with
some prices in prime sales falling 20c to 50c/kg over the last
couple of weeks.
On Monday this week even
with much smaller numbers most
prices fell further with heavy
cows making 200c to 240c in
the Mortlake, Pakenham and
Wagga saleyards while the very
best vealers made 256c to 376c
and yearling steers made 270c to
340c and heifers 240c to 280c/kg
liveweight. On Tuesday evening
MARKET
TALK
Richard Bailey
the Eastern States Young Cattle
Indicator sat at 570c/kg carcass
weight which was 38c/kg less
than the previous week.
Last week we saw the last of
the recognised weaner sales for
the autumn at Powranna when
Nutrien yarded 4,243 head which
is a very big store sale for Tassie
(or for Victoria) and as has been
the case right through the autumn
the quality was very good with
most sourced from the North
East, Northern Midlands, Midlands, Derwent Valley and Central Highlands.
The weaner steers sold to
solid competition from local
and interstate but unfortunately
the heifers were cheaper than
the previous sale.
About 40% were bought by
interstate interests and went as
far north as Goondiwindi on the
NSW/Queensland border and
other orders were into Southern NSW, Gippsland, a central
Victorian feedlot and a load of
heifers went to Western Victoria as future breeders.
Heavy weaner steers (over 330
kg) made $880 to $1,200/head
(av. 315/kg live), medium (280330 kg) $820 to $1,060 (315c),
light (200-280 kg) $500 to $900
(310c) and very small $250 to
$640 (275c). The few heavy heifers made $540 to $800 (210c),
medium $460 to $700 (200c),
light $390 to $600 (200c) and very
small $140 to $400 (165c/kg).
Lamb and mutton prices are
ebbing and 昀氀owing depending on numbers available and
this week we saw an improvement at Bendigo and Ballarat
with prices up $10 to $20/
head with most quotes in the
660c to 690c/kg range with
the National heavy lamb indicator sitting at 652c/kg carcass weight on Monday night.
Mutton prices also improved at
Bendigo on Monday with most
quoted 250c to 290c/kg.

Trade, heavy lambs improve
THERE was a smaller yarding
of 1,054 lambs at Powranna on
Tuesday (513 less) in a market that saw trade and heavy
lambs improve $10 to $15
while light and store lambs lost
much of last week’s gains.
Heavy lambs made $154 to
$186 (the top pen were very
heavy), trade $108 to $164 and
light trade $94 to $106/head.
Restockers bought light
trade for $60 to $94, light $45
to $64 and very small $10 to
$20/head. There was a small-
er penning of 523 mutton (259
less) and while extra heavy
sheep were a little dearer, the
medium and light sheep lost
some of last week’s gains.
Extra heavy sheep made
$56 to $58, heavy $46 to $50,
medium $38 to $54, light $36 to
$42 and very light $20 to $24/
head.
THERE was a similar number
of 152 trade and export cattle with over half being cows.
The quality of trade cattle was
mixed as were the prices with
yearling steers selling for 200c
to 270c, heifers 190c to 210c and
secondary heifers 130c to 154c/kg.
The few grown steers sold to
strong local butcher competition
making 240c to 252c/kg.
There were 85 cows with a
big percentage of store types
included.
Heavy cows recovered last
week’s losses selling 164c to
194c while leaner made 100c
to 166c and very lean 50c to
100c/kg liveweight.
