Festival support plea
MARTINE HALEY
LOCALS are invited to attend the Koonya Garlic Festival annual general meeting this Saturday, June 8, to start planning
for next year’s event after it was cancelled
earlier this year.
Starting at 10 am at the Koonya Hall,
the executive committee will be sworn
in on the day.
The cancellation of this year’s sent
shockwaves through the community.
It was to be the 10th anniversary of the
popular event which draws thousands to
the region.
However, due to illness and a shortage
of volunteers, the committee behind the
event had to make the dif昀cult decision
to cancel in January.
“The Koonya Garlic Festival Committee has been a bit quiet,’’ a spokesperson said.
“We’ve been regrouping and working
out how to ensure the ongoing success
of our beautiful little festival.
“We are now ready to host our AGM
and encourage anyone interested in the
future of the festival to come along.
“To all those who reached out to offer
help following the cancellation of our
2023 event, we thank you again and will
be in touch.’’
Earlier this year, Tasman Mayor Rod
Macdonald said he and the community
were disappointed the event would not
take place.
“The garlic festival has become one
of our most celebrated annual events for
around a decade and the council will hold
further discussions with the organising
committee to explore a way forward.”
The festival, which started out as a
small-scale garlic competition and grew
into an acclaimed and popular event hosting food stalls, music, masterclasses and
garlic themed produce.
