D EBRI S
Elinor (Owens) Sutton was born in Angola, Indiana, on
May 22, 1930, to Ronald and Winifred Owens. After graduating from Angola High School, she attended Purdue University and studied institutional management. At Purdue, she
was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and participated
in Gold Peppers, Activities Bureau, Mortar Board, Virginia
C. Meredith Club, Women’s Athletic Association, and Debris.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree, Sutton worked as a
dietitian in one of the men’s residence halls at Purdue. On
June 13, 1953, she married Ronald Dean Sutton in the First
Congregational Church in Angola; the couple afterwards
moved to Niagara Falls, New York. In 1966, the Sutton family
moved to Ashtabula, Ohio.
A lifelong learner, Sutton earned a master’s degree in education from Buffalo State Teachers College, an educational
specialist degree from Kent State University, and a doctorate in education from the International Graduate School.
She taught fifth grade at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Elementary school in Ashtabula and was a guidance counselor
at Columbus Junior High School and the Ashtabula County
Joint Vocational School.
Sutton enjoyed the company of others and was eager to
lend assistance and advance equity for women and girls
wherever she could. She was a member of the Presbyterian Chapel of the Lakes in Angola; the Psi Iota Xi women’s
philanthropic organization; Steuben County Women’s Club;
the Zonta International service organization; the American
Association of University Women; and the Tourist Book
Club of Ashtabula. She was an avid gourmet cook, gardener,
reader, and traveler, and retirement offered an opportunity
for trips to France, Italy, and Ireland.
Sutton passed away on February 7, 2013, at the age of 82 in
Angola, Indiana. Her obituary stated that “her love of children and dedication to her profession and family made her
an exceptional ‘super mom,’ wife, educator, counselor, and
an inspiration not only to her family but to anyone she met.
She was tremendously admired and will be greatly missed.”
She was a life member of the Purdue Alumni Association.
