CITY LIMITS: POSTCARDS
FROM LOCKDOWN
In this time of fear and change, what has changed? The human population marches
on in the face of the climate crisis, species extinction, overpopulation, and exploitation.
Bound by a 5km travel restriction during the Covid-19 pandemic, this series explores the
suburban landscapes of Officer, Victoria, and its surrounds.
It seems that every inch of the indigenous landscape in this area has been torn apart,
redesigned and repurposed. Clearing of the original woodlands began in 1843 with
the arrival of the first European settlers and now that farmland is being subdivided for
housing, creating one of the fastest growing areas of suburban Melbourne.
By utilising early photographic practices, I have endeavoured to bring out the unnatural
beauty in an otherwise homogeneous and constructed landscape. Highlighting the
change which has happened in a matter of lifetimes using an antiquated technique,
displaced by modern advancements.
