FOREWORD
In this, the strangest year: during my inaugural engagement with Photography Studies
College, as the paint was drying at the brand-new facility in South Melbourne, only 2 weeks
into teaching the first semester (during that very same week when a whole year’s worth
of my commercial work was postponed to oblivion) I, and seven students found ourselves
trying to make sense of what was happening while connected by photography and
conversation via computer screens at our various bunkers…and we weren’t alone.
What became most evident to me in those early weeks, as we were all trying to find our
balance, was just how grateful I was to be teaching, and how lucky to be responsible for
steering and assisting a group of such open and creative thinkers.
This selection reflects on our obligation as artists, at all times, to reach deep into the
imagination– and here they unite with the art major students’ beautiful and extensive work–
to uncover and maintain a persistent vision that will catapult them into this vast and exciting
world of photography.
