Course Outline
This course is perfect for learners who want to acquire sector-specific applied knowledge through vocational
contexts by studying the aims, products and services of different travel and tourism organisations, their use
of consumer technologies, the features of tourist destinations, how organisations meet customer needs and
preferences, and the influences on global travel and tourism as part of their Key Stage 4 learning. The
qualification enables learners to develop their transferable skills, such as researching, planning, and making
decisions and judgements. The qualification recognises the value of learning skills, knowledge and vocational
attributes to complement GCSEs. The qualification will broaden learners’ experience and understanding of
the varied progression options available to them.
There are three components that are taught over the two years. All are interrelated, but assessed in
different ways. These components cover a wide range of topics providing a good breadth of understanding
of the travel and tourism industry.
Component 1: Travel and Tourism Organisations and Destinations
LOA - Demonstrate an understanding of the UK travel and tourism industry
LOB - Explore popular visitor destinations.
This component is worth 30% of the overall grade and is assessed internally through a Pearson Set
Assignment. This is done during assessment conditions in class and comprises of different written tasks
including, reports, articles, presentation materials and emails.
Component 2: Customer Needs in Travel and Tourism
LOA – Demonstrate an understanding of how organisations identify customer needs and travel
and tourism trends
LOB - Recognise how the needs and preferences of travel and tourism customers are met.
This component is worth 30% of the overall grade and is assessed internally through a Pearson Set
Assignment. This is done during assessment conditions in class and comprises of different written tasks
including, reports, articles, presentation materials and emails.
Component 3: Influences on Global Travel and Tourism
LOA - Factors that influence global travel and tourism
LOB - Impact of travel and tourism and sustainability
LOC - Destination management
This component is worth 40% of the overall grade and is assessed externally by an examination at the end of
year 11.
Home Learning
Home learning will be set every week while learning the content before the Pearson Set Assignments. Tasks
will range from creating revision resources, research travel and tourism organisations and news stories,
creating leaflets and posters, exam question practice.
