The art world is evolving at a rapid pace, thanks
to the integration of blockchain technology and
the rise of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Linking
physical art to NFTs offers ease of veri昀椀cation
and provenance tracking, while eliminating the
need for middlemen like auction houses and
galleries. However, this approach is not without
its challenges. We spoke with multi-disciplinary
NFT artist Alex Headlam, who goes by the moniker Aleqth, to understand the opportunities and
hurdles in this new landscape.
The primary advantage of linking physical art
to NFTs is the ability to verify the authenticity of
the artwork. With blockchain technology storing
information immutably, thus preventing any
alterations or forgery. This feature allows buyers
to easily prove their ownership of the NFT and,
consequently, the physical painting. Collectors
can track the provenance and history of the
artwork, which is essential for valuation or
resale purposes.
“In the beginning, people were kind
of buying the pair.
Now it seems like they’re more
interested in the actual physical,”
