As we started 2020 whoever would have imagined where we would
be today. So much has happened. And it’s happened so very quickly.
We’ve gone from working in offices to working remotely. WFH is
the new acronym embraced by all. Zoom meetings are now the new
norm, and “You’re on Mute” the phrase of 2020.
The last 6 months has been challenging, on many different levels.
It’s been technologically challenging and it’s been an emotional
roller coaster for many. Good days, where innovation is taking us
rapidly into the future, and some not so good days. Days which are
complex, ambiguous, challenging and exhausting.
The key to success, success in this rapidly changing COVID
era, is being emotionally intelligent. Understanding ourselves
and understanding others. Relating to others. Being self-aware.
Empathetic. Engaging with others. Learning. Being resilient.
Trusting others. Building relationships. Working together, in times of
Success in 2020, and beyond, requires a certain way of working.
An EQ way. It’s about understanding the framework of Emotional
Intelligence, introduced by Daniel Goleman, and appreciating its

Motivation, Empathy and Social Skill.
Self-awareness means having a deep understanding of one’s
emotions, strengths, weaknesses, needs and drives.
People with strong self-awareness are honest with themselves
and with others. They are neither overly critical nor unrealistically
hopeful. They recognize how their feelings affect them, other
people and their job performance.
People with high self-awareness are candid and have an
ability to assess themselves realistically. They are able
to speak accurately and openly about their emotions
and the impact they have on their work. Self aware
people know and are comfortable talking about
their limitations and strengths and demonstrate
enthusiasm for constructive criticism.
