Let the reading of this parashah be a wakeup call from the sometimes difficult avodah of
daily prayer and lead us to making the right choice this Holy Day of Rosh HaShanah, this
week leading up to Yom Kippur and every single day thereafter. When the King resides in
one’s home, good things are in store for a person and his family.
Rabbi Yehiel M. Kalish (FYHS 1993), after learning at Yeshiva Mercaz
HaTorah in Israel, returned to HTC’s Beis Midrash, earning his degree in
1999, and receiving Semicha in 2000. After serving 2 years in the Illinois
General Assembly, establishing a successful lobbying and consulting
company, and working as V.P. for Development and State Relations for
Agudath Israel of America, he is CEO of Chevra Hatzalah in Brooklyn,
NY, the largest volunteer ambulance company in the United States.
WE CAN DO OUR PART
Submitted by Rabbi Ben-Zion Rand
We find ourselves in a world which is at a crossroads. The world seems to be spinning out
of control without a moral compass to guide it. Within the Torah world, we are seeing
outstanding growth and development in Torah and chessed, firmly rooted in solid
institutions of chinnuch and tefillah. Yet, there is a real feeling of danger lurking due to
blatant anti-semitism from individuals and even government figures, internationally and
in the form of anti-Israel rhetoric. While efforts are constantly being made to mitigate the
threats we face, the solution to our immediate and long-term issues seems elusive.
Fortunately, there is a solution, and it has been tried and tested. With Rosh HaShanah
before us, we have direct access to the key to geulah. Faith, emunah and bitachon
always precede and even facilitate geulah. Simply stated, our acceptance of God’s
dominion upon ourselves is a declaration that we are ready and prepared to do that
which is incumbent upon us, and we are thereby assured that Hashem will then do
His part. As the Mishnah at the end of Sotah (9:15) states, “With the footsteps of
Moshiach, insolence will increase, and inflation will soar...the government will turn to
heresy, and there will be no rebuke...” The Mishnah, after describing what can only be
described as a pathetic world, concludes with a promise and a consolation, “On
whom can we rely? Only upon our Father in Heaven.”
With our doing our part, we then willingly submit the rest to Hashem, which is consoling and
reassuring. As we recognize that we are in God’s hands. we can joyously stand together
and anticipate the promise of a year of geulah, life, prosperity, and nachas. Together, as a
united people, Klal Yisrael will merit to usher in an era of peace and kiddush Hashem.
