ANSWERS
1. The word " "ִשׁ ְב ֵט יֶכ םis connected to the previous word "“( "ָר אֵשׁ יֶכ םheads”). The
ִשׁ ְב ֵט יֶכ םare the leaders that rule. Rulers have a staff ( )ֶשׁ ֶב טto confirm their rulings.
2. The word "“( "ְוָה ָיהAnd it will be”) at the beginning of the pasuk indicates that we
should understand that all blessings and curses from Hashem are perfect, when
we understand the ways of Hashem. (see Bereshis Rabbah 42:3)
3. It refers to the whole Torah. The pasuk indicates that all of the mitzvos are part
of the general mitzvah – that one has to keep the Torah.
4. Since Selichos usually starts in the morning while it is still dark, some say that one must
rewash one’s hands (without a brachah), as one must wash one’s hands at daybreak.
5. One reason is practical, as davening on Rosh HaShanah is lengthy, and one
should try to perform a Bris as early as possible (preferably before midday).
Another reason is that we mention the attempted sacrifice of Yitzchak (the
Akeidah) during the Shofar blowing. Since Yitzchak had the great mitzvah of Bris
before the Akeidah, we remember these mitzvos in the same order.
6. At the time of the Akeidah (which we remember during Shofar blowing),
Avraham kept Yitzchak hidden before building the Altar, so that the Satan would
not wound him and invalidate Yitzchak as a sacrifice.
