MAKING ROOM FOR MORE.
Heart Church Roma was founded in
1989, and has a rich history and legacy
within our Movement.
Relatively new to INC, Pastors Damian
and Niomie Corkett moved to Roma and
took on the leadership of Heart Church
in March 2019. Immediately they fell
in love with the place and the people,
and with their seven children they have
embraced Roma as their home.
The previous leadership team of Heart
Church had built a strong foundation
by purchasing a church facility and
quickly paying it off. The building was a
relatively new purchase, as well as the
first property the church had owned
in its history. Damian and Niomie
acknowledge the blessing and faithful
stewardship and forward planning of
the previous pastors and leaders. They
are thankful that they could start their
journey as pastors without debt and
rent payments, because of those who
had gone before them.
Some years earlier, after moving to
another regional town, Niomie was
phoning churches trying to find the best
church for them. When hearing the size
of their family, one church replied, "we
don't have room for you."
The church's previous building was at capacity.
It may have been this moment that
planted the seed that inspired Damian
and Niomie to always make room for
new individuals and families.
Throughout 2019, God birthed a dream
for Heart Church's next steps. As much
as the Corketts were thankful for their
church property, with a 6m frontage
(see photo below) and the seats already
filled to capacity on Sundays, Damian
and Niomie realised they were going to
need something bigger.
Towards the end of that year, they
discovered a church building on a
double block in the centre of town – and
it was for sale. For the next few months
they would go out every morning and
pray over the block. Niomie felt God
say that they would purchase the
block for $140,000 – just over half of
the asking price.
After speaking to INC leadership and
other experienced pastors within
the Movement, Damian presented a
business case to INC. They discussed
plans of a new building to replace the
current one, and shared their vision of a
café, soup kitchen and childcare centre.
By February 2020, Damien phoned the
church who were selling the block, and
proposed the sum that Niomie felt God
had given her.
The owners weren't willing to make
That night Niomie prayed and cried out
to God as she fell asleep. She dreamed
of the block of land, and saw the facility
that they planned to build – as if it was
already a reality.
The next day, the owners called
Damian back and requested the
offer in writing!
Throughout the COVID lockdown of
2020, the team was able to improve the
new building and prepare for the launch
back into in-person services not long
after settlement was complete.
Having recently celebrated the first
anniversary of their new building, Heart
Church Roma is now looking ahead to a
time when they will be able to build their
Countless young people and families
have made Heart Church their home,
upon reading the billboard on the new
block that reads "making room for you".
Damian and Niomie believe the fruit
they are seeing now is a result of the
foundation established by leaders that
went before them. They are passionate
about continuing to build on that
foundation for the benefit of future
The new building has twice the capacity of their previous building.
