ENDODONTICS
WORKING LENGTH DETERMINATION
Most of the apex locators available currently measure
your working length 0.5 mm short of the apex.
Placing a surgical suction (with narrow tip) will allow
Enlarging the coronal and middle third of the canal
and drying the canals will help to get a more reliable
reading.
Using files that contact the wall of the root canal is
more effective than very loose files in getting correct
reading.
CLEANING AND SHAPING
Starting the canal negotiation with a No# 10 K file is
ideal, to create a glide path.
Always leave the canal flooded with irrigant for lubrication and to prevent Instrument separation.
In case of severely tortuous canals, No#06 or No#08
C+files will be helpful to scout, because of its added
rigidity over a normal K file.

better visualization and better aspiration. When it
comes to a fast and efficient way to evacuate blood,
fluids, chemicals and dry the canal, Luer Vac Adapter
(Ultradent Product) is very useful.(Fig:10)
17% EDTA can be used to remove the smear layer and
17% EDTA in liquid form is an effective chelating agent
while working in tortuous canals. Liquid EDTA is better
than the paste form because of its penetrability and
surfactant effect.
Once the patency is achieved; complete the
Shaping of canal by crown down instrumentation
technique. Use any Rotary NiTi available in the market
and follow the manufacturer’s instruction to get the
best result.
IRRIGATION/SODIUM
HYPOCHLORITE ACCIDENT
Copious irrigation with Sodium Hypochlorite of known
concentration (at least 2.5%) is the economical and
easily available irrigant.
The risk of a Sodium hypochlorite accident can be
avoided by using a side vent needle (Fig:9) bent
within 2-3 mm short of the apex of the shortest canal.

OBTURATION OF ROOT CANAL
Select a GP cone that corresponds with the last file
used to prepare the canal. If it fits with a tug back, to
the working length, that is perfect. If its lose area a
Gutta Percha Guage (Fig 11)to refine the tip to the
needed size. If the cone does not reach the apex,
then select the next smaller core and use the Gutta
Percha Gauge to cut it to the apical file size.
