INTRODUCTION & HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
ilver has been valued for years for its
antimicrobial properties such as romans
described in their first book of medicine of
placing silver foil in wounds, alexander
stored water in silver tanks. Silver was also used by
some communities to slow the growth of bacteria in
water by dropping silver coins. As silver got better
understood it continued to play important in
manufacturing of medical devices such as sutures,
cardiac devices etc. the first use of silver in dentistry is
dated back to 1840 in the form of silver nitrate that

was known to be extreamly caustic and would instantly cauterize the carious lesion by achieving a
hard dark crust on the teeth. This became extremely
popular medicament through the era of GV Black. In
1917 ammoniacal silver nitrate solution was formed
and marketed as an antimicrobial product. In 1970
silver fluoride was used as part of minimally invasive
treatment for disadvantaged young children in new
south wales which was essential in inhibiting the
growth of existing carious lesion followed by application
of stannous fluoride. This served the dual purpose, first
