A METHOD OF
CROSSBITE SETTING
natomic changes take place within the
alveolar ridges subsequent to dental
extractions. Loss of teeth and altered
functions within and around the socket
results in a series of adaptive changes. Epithelial tissue
begins its proliferation and migration within the first
week. In about six months, disrupted tissue integrity is
restored by newly formed bone. Residual ridges are
thus formed and which serve as the major support
area for the complete dentures. Success in

removable prosthodontics is partly dependent on the
size of the residual ridges. The size of the residual ridge
is reduced most rapidly in the first 6 months, but the
bone resorption activity continues
throughout life at a slower rate, resulting in the removal
of a large quantity of jaw bone structure. Progressive
resorption of the residual ridges makes the maxillae
narrower and the mandible wider. A drastic discrepancy in the arch width results in a cross bite situation.
