Fifth International Conference of the Hospital Infection
Society, 2002
The fifth international conference of the Hospital
Infection Society took place in the Edinburgh
International Conference centre in September 2002.
The key ideas those were discussed were the role of
vaccination in preventing nosocomial infection and
about evidence based guidelines in preventing
infections at a hospital based setting
the centerstage with more norms put into place. The
recent guidelines, concepts and matters of debate
are to be discussed in the upcoming issues of this
article that are to follow.

CONCLUSION
Hospital infection control has grown exponentially
since its beginning in the mid-20th century. The steady
progress made in hospital infection control over the
last several centuries is remarkable, although
infections continue to pose a significant and lethal risk
to hospitalized patients, even in the post antibiotic
era. This paper looks briefly summarising the changes,
problems and advances in infection control up to the
present time.
This brief overview of the history of infection control
draws attention to the many challenges that lie at
present and beyond. Although hospital infection
control has been accepted in theory as an important
and necessary discipline in most hospitals in the world,
the practical application of the principles involved in
such control is often conspicuous by its absence.
There is need to convince the health authorities that
money and time spent on the implementation of
effective and efficient infection control programmed
is time and money wisely spent.
