Going above and beyond
“The stakeholders of a client were sceptical about the chosen platform’s ability to meet their
needs. To reassure them, I created bi-weekly video demonstrations, which were distributed
to the stakeholders before our review meetings.
This provided the stakeholders with the opportunity to review what had been developed,
assuring them that the chosen solution would meet their needs and enabled them to ask
more considered and thought-provoking questions at the review meetings. I provided the
client’s development team with technical videos, which enriched their understanding of the
platform on a development level. The developers were then able to utilise these videos to
assist them in developing applications on the platform.”
Build Trust
“I took over the management of a project that was implementing an incident and hazard
management system. The project was in crisis with schedule, budget and scope issues.
The existing project manager went on leave after a very basic handover. I was able to build a
trusted relationship with the key stakeholders, vendor and steering committee. I performed a
detailed review of the project status and recommended a revised project plan, which enabled
me to deliver the project within the agreed timeframe and revised project budget.”
Make a change
“I was given the assignment of getting a challenging program of work back on track for a
government department. The battle lines were drawn, the business was extremely unhappy,
the project team were not delivering, and the whole working environment was dominated by
stress and fear. It was a constant battle as I looked to build a more collaborative approach
to delivery.
After a few months, the program was back on track and there were some improvements in
the working environment. I could have left it at that and the client would have been satisfied.
The project team were on 1-year fixed term contracts and this lead to a high turnover in staff
and the organisation losing its top performers.
I campaigned the project sponsor, delivery manager and ICT director to offer the project team
longer contracts. I highlighted the benefits of a stable and happy workforce. As a flow-on
effect, all of the team were offered 2-year contracts. Although it was a small win, it was a vital
one. It was a tiny step in changing the culture for the better.”
