The good news? It is back. Very back.
Thomas noted that people are scrambling to nd
stage space. “Georgia has been very fortunate in that it
has a lot of stage space,” said Thomas. Most of the stages
in Georgia are currently involved in production.
The virus has made on-location shoots a little more
difficult because it is harder to control but a closed set
can be tightly monitored with limited crew and strict
protocols. The unions, which make up nearly all the jobs
on a set, got together immediately in the spring following the COVID shutdown to plan for safe operations.
Triple C for a Safe Environment
In search of those safe operations, the Georgia Film
Academy found a new reason to expand its curriculum.
“We leveraged our program at the beginning of the pandemic to create a course we call our Triple C, the Covid
Compliance Course,” said Stepakoff. “Approximately
15,000 people have taken it now and it’s an example of
the kind of value we add to the taxpayers of Georgia
who support us. We offer these classes to productions,
to crews, to our students. So that anybody can understand how to work in a safe environment on our soundstages and sets.”
The course is free for lm production crews and
approved by the Centers for Disease Control and the
Georgia Department of Public Health. The course is all

online, with videos and quizzes to earn a course completion certicate. There is a “General Prevention” course
but also specic classes for different occupations or areas
of production like the Art Department, Camera Professionals or Grips and Electricians.
It is a big part of the reason why Georgia’s stages are
already full. Noted Stepakoff, “I think it’s an example of
why, when the pandemic is over, Georgia will be not only
a viable alternative to Brooklyn and Burbank, but I think
will be the future epicenter of the entertainment economy of the United States— potentially the world. This
is really going to be a legacy for future Georgians what
we’re doing here.”
