in some of the worst weather and
over holidays when they leave their
families to get the lights on for our
customers. That’s why, from transmission lines that carry power from
generating plants to substations, to
distribution lines that deliver safe
and affordable energy to customers’
homes and businesses, our teams
are strengthening the energy grid.
We want our system to be the best
it can be, for not only our customers
but also for our employees.
Over the last 10 years, we have
invested approximately $10 billion
to strengthen the reliability and
resiliency of our network. And we’re
going further. Under our ongoing grid investment program, we
are addressing under-performing
equipment and aging substations
and strengthening power lines to
enhance system reliability and resiliency in blue skies and in stormy
weather. This can include installing
smart technology that helps prevent
or reduce the duration of power
outages, upgrading or rebuilding
substations and placing lines underground where it makes sense. This
work is making a difference. Recent
grid improvements are showing an
average improvement of up to 50
percent in reliability for some customers, meaning fewer outages, and
when service is interrupted, faster
restoration times.
PK All Georgians are feeling the
pressure of inflation. What is Georgia
Power doing to balance these investments with costs to customers?
KG We say it all the time at Georgia
Power, and it’s true— our customers
are at the center of everything we
do. Our goal is always going to be to
keep rates as low as possible, and
we prioritize affordability for our
customers every day. We understand
energy costs are an important part
of everyone’s budget. That’s why we
work to run our business efficiently,
taking affordability into account, and
why we offer programs and resources all year long to help customers
manage their energy use and lower
their energy costs.
We have a focus on connecting
customers— including senior citizens, those with one-time or ongoing special needs, and those with
limited incomes— with programs
and resources from Georgia Power
as well as those offered by established non-profit, faith-based or
governmental organizations to aid
them in lowering and paying their
bills when they’re in need.
Working with the Georgia PSC,
we’ve increased the senior citizen
discount, bringing the total discount
to $33.50 per month for customers 65
years or older who may qualify for a
discount based on income. Our teams
are also dedicated to helping customers access energy assistance funds.
In 2023 we hosted more than 230
local community events to inform and
engage with our customers. •
