Dr. Georj Lewis became Clayton
State University’s seventh
president on February 1. Just a
few months ago, faculty and staff
flooded Spivey Hall to listen to
Dr. Lewis’ State of the University
address, which covered a
multitude of past, present and
future institutional subjects. To
follow up, James staff writer
Cindy Morley posed the following
questions to find out more about
Dr. Lewis and his goals.
CM Can you give us a brief recap
of your experiences leading up to
taking the president’s role?
GL Prior to joining Clayton State,
I served nearly three decades in
leadership and administrative roles
at state and regional institutions. I
am active in the metro Atlanta community, and a member of the Board
of Directors of the ATL Airport
Chamber, a member of the Georgia
Chamber of Commerce, a member
of the Board of Directors for the
Metropolitan Regional Educational
Service Agency (Metro RESA), a
sub-committee member of the Aerotropolis Atlanta Alliance, Inc., and a
Metro Atlanta Industry Partnerships
(MAIP) partner. I am also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
Incorporated, the 100 Black Men
of Atlanta and a member of Impact
Church in East Point.

A native of southwestern Pennsylvania, I earned a Bachelor of
Science in Business/Accounting,
and Master of Arts in Counseling/
Student Personnel, both from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and
a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Georgia Southern University. I am blessed to be the husband
of Mrs. Anchelle Lewis, and proud
to be the father of Miles, Georj II,
and Jazmyn and the grandfather of
Taylor, Taliya, Miles Jr. and Tres.
CM How many students do you currently serve at Clayton State University and what programs are Clayton
State best known for?
GL We serve approximately 5,800 undergraduate and graduate students.
In the fall of 2022, the largest
major measured by population was
health sciences followed by psychology and human services (undergraduate). On the graduate level the MBA
program is by far the largest program.

CM Can you talk about a strategic
plan for the university? What are the
goals for the next five years?
GL The institution is in the process
of working on the strategic plan,
and has been working with internal and external stakeholders since
May of 2023. The plan is slated to be
launched in March of 2024 and will
chart the course for the university for
