Letters Hayling Herald
Caught in the act of saving forlorn daffs
Dear Editor,
HOW beautiful the display of daffodils has
been this year, particularly on the patch of
grass between Rails Lane and Salterns Lane,
pictured.
On Thursday, March 14th, I was cycling up to
the pet shop in Eastoke, when I noticed a couple
of daffodils lying in the gutter, so decided to pick
them up on my way back home to Mengham
Avenue.
On further inspection, it appeared that several daffodils had been broken off, at the base,
from the main plants and were strewn around
the grass. I parked my bike and started to pick
them up because I felt sorry for them, lying there
wilting, and decided to take them home and put
them in a vase.
As I began to do this, I heard a long, loud
'beep' from a car waiting to pull out from Salterns
Lane into Rails Lane. The lady in the car shouted:
‘I hope you are not picking those daffodils!! You
are not allowed to do that!'’
I explained that I was not picking them; I was
purely picking up the ones which had already
been broken off, (either by animals, birds or
wind, etc?) but she didn't seem convinced and
said I wouldn't find any more. I said that there
were several more and continued to pick them
up as she drove away.
It then occurred to me that everyone who
drove past as I was doing so must have been of
the same opinion – that I was stealing daffodils
that did not belong to me, and I did indeed see
someone glaring at me as I finished!
I am the last person that would take anything
which is not mine and I was only doing it because I am a big softy and felt sorry for the poor
daffodils that had been broken off at the base of
their stems; some in full flower and some in bud.
They are now in a vase at my house – but I
won't be picking up any more.
I felt it necessary to send this letter as I needed
to make the situation clear – and also say that I
quite understood the lady for thinking that I was
stealing them.
On a similar subject, I often go out shearing
(NOT pulling out) grass from the sea front or
grass verges for my guinea pigs. On one occasion
a couple came over to me and asked if I was foraging for magic mushrooms! When I told them
I was gathering grass for my 15 guinea pigs, they
laughed and said: ‘Good on you!’
With best wishes to all Islanders,
Debbie Brett
