Pupils celebrate debating success
By Mark Coates
THE Hayling College Debate Club, led by Captain Isabelle Allen, has gone from strength to
strength in the past few years, and this was
demonstrated with first and third placed teams
in the District Heats of Youth Speaks! 2024,
triumphing over all the other local schools in
Havant and Waterlooville.
Unfortunately, only one of our teams could go
through to the regional final, where they put on a
superb debate and only narrowly lost to Mayville
High School (by just two points out of 100), coming
a very respectable second – a position they want to
improve upon next year!
Huge congratulations to Hattie, Erin and Evie for
their performance, as well as the rest of the Debate
Club squad who have worked so hard.
They have produced such great debates as ‘Are
private schools really better than state schools?’
and ‘Universities: are they really worth the cost?’

After a great season of speaking, we now look
forward to welcoming some pupils from the junior schools to Hayling College in the summer to
meet our Debate Club members and take part in
a micro-debate.
