Community update Hayling Herald
Arts Trail 2024 is almost here!
By Karen Morling
WE are getting ever closer to our annual Hayling
Island Arts Trail.
Applications have now closed for 2024 entries, and
we can confirm that there will be more than 50 artists taking part this year. For those new to the trail,
it was initially funded by Havant Borough Council
from 2004 to 2011.
Once this funding ended, Hayling, Havant and
Waterlooville continued to run a yearly event, but in
2018 we went solo, and the Hayling Island Arts Trail
was formed.
Artists all over the Island open their homes and
studios to exhibit their work – from paintings, pottery, jewellery, garden accessories and much, much
more. There is certainly something for everyone.
As part of the lead up to the event, we will be holding a preview evening at St Mary’s Church on April
17th between 6pm and 8pm. Each artist will have
one piece of work on display as a taster for things to
come. Please come and join us!
Remember to add the dates for the Arts Trail
Weekend in your diary on May 11th and 12th.

details.
Abigail’s Party Let’s make the
By David Penrose
BENCH Theatre’s April production is Mike Leigh’s brilliant comedy,
Abigail’s Party.
Beverly and Laurence’s toe-curling soirée shows off their new money
social aspirations to their neighbours. Among them is Sue, already a bag
of nerves as her teenage daughter, Abigail, is holding her own party a
few doors away.
Created for both stage and television in 1977, the play has become a
modern classic. Alison Steadman’s monstrous Beverly is seared into the
memory of everyone who ever saw it, and millions did on the BBC.
In a list of the ‘100 Greatest British Television Programmes’ drawn up
by the British Film Institute in 2000, Abigail’s Party came 11th.
The play was also staged with the same cast at the Hampstead Theatre
and has been revived many times since.
The Bench has turned out a gifted cast of comic actors, many of them
well know to our audiences. They are under the direction of Alan Ward,
whose past successes with the company include Equus and Death of a
Salesman.
n At The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre, East Street, Havant.
Thursday, April 18th to Saturday, April 20th, and Wednesday April 24th
to Saturday, April 27th at 7.30, with a matinee on Saturday, April 20th at
2.30pm.

Island smoke-free
By Sarah Henderson from
Solutions4Health
CAN you support us to make Hayling
a Smoke Free Island?
WE are running an event Saturday,
April 27th at Hayling Island Community Centre, pictured right, from
10.45am – 4pm with that objective.
The aim of the event is to promote our Stop Smoking Hampshire
scheme. It’s a free smoking cessation
service offering free nicotine replacement therapies and support to anyone
in Hampshire.
The event will also promote health,
wellbeing and a more active lifestyle
on Hayling Island, with activities
run by experts from Seacourt Tennis
Club.
There will also live music, face
painting and a raffle.
We are offering businesses on Hayling Island to have a free stall for the
day to promote their business.
We will be running a raffle supporting the Island youth charity WAVE.
Businesses are being asked if they
would like to donate a prize to the
charity to help raise money for
WAVE.
