Three Harbours Regatta
By Mike Gilbert of Coastal Rowing Academy
JANUARY saw the first Three Harbours Pilot Gig Regatta at Eastney Cruising Association.
Hayling-based Langstone Gig Club and the Academy
competed with the Royal Navy; Lewes; Yarmouth and Eastney’s home crews.
It was great to see nine local gigs on the water battling-out a five-mile and one-mile (Mulberry) sprint. Honours went to Langstone with two wins and Lewes with one.
Coastal Sculling
A British Rowing Management team dropped in to discuss our long-term plans to support pre-Olympic training
around Hayling, with a regional centre to support this new
offshore racing activity.
Coastal Sculling has two disciplines – Enduro races that
are four km to six km in length; and Beach Sprints – a one
km dash off a beach around a buoy and back… helter-skelter and highly competitive.
Beach Sprints have now been approved for the Olympic
Games in Los Angeles in 2028. So, if you have youngsters
keen on taking up an exciting and growing new water
sport, with unique – Olympic opportunities – now is the
time to start.
The Swift Winter Series of Coastal Sculling Enduro races
continued with another round of races for ladies, men and
mixed at Itchenor. The Academy ladies won the womens
events, with Bosham the mixed and Itchenor the men.
Recreational rowing continues across the three harbours
for all, throughout the winter – a group from Tudor Sailing
Club visited Dell Quay across the other side of Chichester
Harbour and here are our sculling racers chatting with the
Gig rowers in Laura Jane.
Get Up and Go! rowing is back
Our 2024 programme started with an open day at Northney on March 16th – now including fixed-seat from midday and sliding-seat boats from 2pm.
It is one the most popular of Havant Borough Council’s inspirational programmes to get people active, after a
break. Call Mike Gilbert on 07767 350512 or email: academymike@yahoo.com. Alternatively, visit coastalrowingThe Coastal Rowing Academy at Eastney Cruising Association, and the sculling team, bottom
