Welcome...
to our annual KBHR Bull and Heifer sale!
The year 2024 started out wet but ended up very
dry around here for most producers in this area. Dry
weather makes for a much easier winter and maybe
that will mean less work during calving season if that
trend continues. Jake is grateful for not having to push
snow much at all this winter…and hopefully won’t be
doing that on sale day this year!
Our family has had some wonderful additions
this past year. In August, we were all very happy to
welcome Mackenzie Holkesvig to our family when her
and Jake were married on the 24th! Mackenzie has
a full-time position with the ND DOT, but we much
appreciate her assistance when she can make time
to help us work cattle. On October 10th, Tegan Sue
Osterbauer joined Tess, Thomas and Tate’s family so
now we are blessed with 4 grandchildren to help keep
everyone busy! The imaginations of Iva and Tate make
life fun no matter what we’re doing but it almost always
involves working cattle or farming. Luke and Katy’s
youngest, Rhett, is holding his own with Iva so their
interactions are sometimes entertaining too.

The cattle look great this year! Our goal is to raise
cattle that are functionally sound, calve easy, perform well, and have great numbers. The EPDs and indexes
information helps with selection and improves the predictability on the performance of their offspring. Our
indexes have gone in the right direction over time and increased profitability of their offspring. Luke has
been closely analyzing the carcass data on cattle we feed out and correlates the results back to the terminal
index information. The higher premiums are almost always paid on the higher quality carcasses and those
carcasses are out of animals with better numbers! It costs us money to get that data back, but that is what
helps us to raise the kind of cattle that will increase your profitability in your cattle…. regardless if you are a
seedstock or commercial cattle producer. The numbers are a great tool, but we also cull animals that don’t
make the cut for other reasons as needed.
We hope you can stop by before the sale to visit if you want to talk about which sire group might
be of interest to you and you are always welcomed to call and visit or just come to the place
on sale day and see the cattle for yourself. Everyone has their own goals for their own
herd and we respect that.
We can offer calving ease, performance and a more profitable carcass in the
same animal.
We enjoy visiting with all of you and hope you will be able to join us Thursday
March 6th at the ranch!
