Megan Baker
Inspired by Titan9s 8Bacchus and Ariadne9 painting (1520-23), this series by Megan Baker explores
moments of stillness within nature, capturing a feeling of comfort in solitude where the vastness of landscape makes us conscious of our contained
state as human beings. Unfolding through layers of impasto, Baker9s painting suggests an ever-changing state of being, where fragmented and gestural 昀gures are interrupted by the immediacy of paint.
Focusing on the physicality of the medium itself, Baker9s practice is centred on the way time can be experienced through painting. Baker uses paint
as a way to expand and extend time in a world where everyday encounters feel instant and condensed. In turn, as the perception of time shifts and
evolves, we are absorbed by the search and discovery of the next hidden detail.
This oscillation of time intercepts the way the painting is perceived, the surface 昀ickering between a recognisable form and a sweeping brushstroke.
As if at the precipice of shifting, they capture a motion caught somewhere set amongst the in-between, of dream and reality, of the hidden and
found, where the subjects appear to be at a point of forming or on the edge of disappearing.
