The Society of Portrait
Sculptors
Have you ever thought of having a portrait made? This is a unique
opportunity to see the work of some of the world9s top portrait
sculptors who will be exhibiting their work in the beautiful Garrison
Chapel gallery, Chelsea Barracks 3 just a ten-minute walk from Sloane
Square. Entry is free.
This is the largest international exhibition of contemporary portrait
sculpture in the country, with some 100 selected portraits. As well as
work from Society members, the exhibition will be showing exhibits
created by sculptors from over 20 countries around the world. On show
will be an exciting collection of portrait sculpture, created in an array
of materials, from traditional bronze, plaster and ceramic, to recycled
cardboard or string to name just a few.
The Society of Portrait Sculptors is a charity, and a representative body
of professional sculptors committed to making portrait and 昀gurative
sculpture accessible to a wider public. The Society9s aim is to advance
the art of three-dimensional and bas-relief portraiture and to maintain,
promote and encourage the highest standards. Its hope is to challenge
preconceptions about portrait sculpture and to stimulate increased
interest in an art form that is timeless yet contemporary. To achieve
this, it works in several ways, primarily through its Annual Open
Exhibition but also encouraging education and training in the art
through lectures, prizes and sculpture classes.
There will be free portrait sculpture classes for students during the
exhibition, tutored by some of the Society9s members. Details will be
published on the Society9s website (www.portrait-sculpture.org) nearer
the exhibition, together with plans for some live sculpting
demonstrations by members during the exhibition.
