Ecology, landscape character, flooding data, education, play provision,
historical mapping, planning restrictions, transport
The masterplan process for this study is outlined
in Figure 1.
Stage 2
(Assessment)
Site visit
The diagram reflects the stages of developing
masterplans recommended by The Design Council
which is the UK Government advisor on design.
Their advisory services includes The Commission
for the Built Environment (CABE) which advocates
the principles for developing sites set out in the
2006
CABE
publication
Design
and
Access Statements; How to read and write
them. This suggests a four-stage approach:
Assessment,
Involvement, Evaluation and
Design.
These stages are reflected in the methodology
outlined, however due to the complexity of the
sites and the need to engage and involve
stakeholders throughout the process, the stages
are more iterative reflecting the level of review of
the illustrative masterplans.

Stage 3
(Evaluation)
Development of constraints plans
Identify the constraints of the site and be based
on best practice guidelines and the planning policy
Stage 4
(Design and Involvement)
Discussion with developer /site promoter of the Draft Concept plans
This stage allowed the master plan to be commercially checked.
Revision will be made to draft concept masterplan if required
Stage 5
(Design and Involvement)
Consultation on emerging plans
Stage 6
(Evaluation)
Write up final report and recommendations
