1960s through 2007
Over the years, from the late
1960s through the 1990s,
various designs explored ways
to reorient the Sanctuary to
make connections with the
Education Building.
Some of
these designs were initiated due
to the expansion of Colonial
Drive, which brought high traffic
lanes closer to the church. The
most recent effort to design a
connection was completed in
2000 in conjunction with Park
Lake Presbyterian Church’s 75th
Anniversary.
In 1996, a long-range planning committee was formed to explore ways that the
church could address building and design deficiencies for the current use of
the Sanctuary and Education Building. It was determined that connecting each
building, reorienting the Sanctuary’s main floor by 180 degrees, and moving
the Fellowship Hall to the second level and the Childcare Center to the lower
level of the Education Building was a way to accomplish those goals. A
Building Campaign was undertaken and $1.4 million dollars was raised.
However, due to the cost of connecting the buildings and the priority of
getting a safer location for church parking, the narthex connector design was
paused and in 2002, the church repurposed the funds to purchase Davis Motel
