Narthex
The Narthex is the space that provides a transition between the exterior of the
building and the church’s seating and worship area. It prepares you to
experience the main church space, called a Nave. This space helps to
acoustically buffer the Nave from outside traffic noise and provides a
temperature and humidity buffer from the outside heat and humidity to a cool
and dryer interior environment. When the church was originally constructed,
the center of the Narthex was a covered entry space, open to the exterior, and
Colonial Drive was a quieter two-lane road on the outskirts of town.
Once the Narthex was fully enclosed, small stained-glass windows were added
over the doors. These are called transom windows and are best viewed from
the interior during daylight hours and from the exterior at night.
