Silver Anniversary (1950-1951)
In 1950, growing congregational needs led the church to conduct a Silver
Anniversary fundraiser to expand the Sanctuary and add an Educational
Building to the church grounds. The fundraiser was a success, and the church
Session commissioned the design and construction of the west and East
Transepts, along with spaces for the organ loft, a small chapel, choir practice
room and restroom facilities on the lower level and adjacent to the chapel.
These additions, which were constructed in 1955 after the Educational
Building was completed, brought the seating capacity to approximately 800
people.
Alternate design proposed for the 1950 Sanctuary additions. Note the
addition of a third tower and changes to the front tower, along with the
proposed relocation of the front stairs. This was prompted by the City
and State proposed widening of Colonial Drive. This design was used for
the Silver Anniversary Building Program but was not implemented.
