SHORT TERM RENTAL
ST Rental Overlay
The Limited Business, LB District is intended to allow a limited variety
of commercial uses and services associated with neighborhood retail,
financial and office activities which are compatible with residential areas.
The hours of operation for most permitted commercial uses are restricted
to between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. Gasoline service stations are permitted only
as a special exception subject to the approval of the Board of Zoning
Appeals. Prohibited uses include, but are not limited to bars, liquor stores,
car washes as a principal use, bowling alleys, billiard parlors, dance halls,
restaurants with drive-thru service windows, and automobile sales.
Old City Heights District: 2.5-3
The Old City Height District (is comprised of several height district
classifications and includes all of peninsular Charleston lying south of Mt.
Pleasant St and the extension thereof across the entire peninsula, the
Magnolia redevelopment area (west of I-26, South of Hagood Rd and about
400 north of Mechanic St), and portions of West Ashley Albemarle area
(generally within the area bound by Hwy 17, Ashley Point Drive/SC 30
ramp and Albemarle Rd). Certain height districts in the Old City Height
District have minimum and maximum height requirements and some have
additional building setback requirements.
Amusements & Recreation Overlay:
The AR Overlay Zone applies to all areas of peninsula section of the city
as bounded by the Ashley River, the Cooper River and Charleston Harbor
Short Term Rentals Overlay- STR:
The Short Term Overlay Zone is intended to permit short term rentals, as
defined herein, in the CT, LB, GB, UC, MU-1, MU-1/WH, MU-2 and MU-2/
WH base zoning districts within the ST Overlay Zone, if a conditional use
permit is approved by the City.
Old City District:
Historic under Board of Architectural Review (BAR ) purview. Within the
historic districts, the BAR reviews all new construction, alterations and
renovations visible from the public right-of-way. The BAR reviews all
demolitions of buildings 50 years of age or older on any structures south
of Mount Pleasant Street, and any demolitions (regardless of age) within
the Old and Historic District. In addition, the BAR has jurisdiction over all
structures included on the Landmark Overlay Properties list.
