Human Growth & Development
Beginning in Upper Elementary and continuing into Middle School,
designated time is set aside to cover the topic Human Growth and
Development. This complies with the Oregon Department of Education’s Health Standards Curriculum requirements.
Parents are encouraged to participate in conversations with their
children before, during and after this instructional period. They are
notified of the time designated for this topic well in advance, and invited to an evening with the Upper Elementary teachers to review the
curriculum and ask questions. As children advance in age, the subject
of Sexual Health and Education becomes more comprehensive.
Comprehensive sexuality education is an age-specific, curriculum-based process aimed to equip children and young people with
knowledge and skills that will empower them to:

Realize their health, well-being and dignity;
Develop respectful social and sexual relationships;
Consider how their choices affect their own well-being and that
of others;
Understand and ensure the protection of their rights throughout
their lives.
For further information you are invited to attend the Human Development Parent Night (dates available in February), or ask the Director
of Education or your child’s teacher for a copy of ODE, Sexuality
Education, Frequently Asked Questions.
