A lot can happen in 10 years. If you
need any evidence of this, look no
further than Nottinghamshire’s Explore
Industrial Park (EIP) – site of the most
automated concrete products
facility in Europe.
EIP is capable of efficiently delivering
major elements of a project’s structure
faster, safer and to a higher quality
standard, all producing less waste
than through traditional methods
of construction. Each component
is produced, quality checked and
transported to its project, ready for
seamless assembly on site. A recent
example of this full and complex
capability is The Grange University
Hospital in Cwmbran, Wales, where
around 42 weeks has been saved
against the original construction
programme with further time
opportunities being explored.
Since production began a decade
ago, a typical workforce of 400 people
has manufactured one million tonnes
of products, with a total production
value of over £350 million.
It’s big, it’s powerful and it’s prominent,
and one of the key differentiators
for the Laing O’Rourke business.
Together with our wider family of
specialist businesses (take a look at
page 30), it has been the catalyst in
helping us deliver our world-renowned
70:60:30 objective. The combined
expertise of EIP and Crown House
Technologies Manufacturing,
in Oldbury, has seen Laing O’Rourke
complete 350 DfMA-led projects

10 years ago, it was an industry
phenomenon. Today, it’s widely
regarded as necessary – and
something Laing O’Rourke competitors
are wishing they’d picked up sooner.
But while they’re grappling with
getting the basics of DfMA right,
we are already looking to what the
next phase, with our most recent
investments and innovations for
advanced manufacturing, has in store.
