“I did color guard in high school. Then, I started doing drum
corps. It’s basically marching band, but like, more “the big
leagues”. We would work 17 hour days and sleep on gym
floors. There wasn’t always air-conditioning. One time, our
bus broke down in New Jersey and we spent 14 hours on
the side of the road. I had a 45 minute nap and then we went
on to perform. It was really difficult. We performed in Avon
Lake, Ohio, and a lot of Southwind alumni were there. It was
probably the best show we ever performed and we got a
standing ovation. The feeling of all of that hard work paying
off... I had never been in a stadium of people cheering for me.
Even though it wasn’t specifically for me, it was for the group,
I just felt really proud of being a part of that group. I feel like
the people that I met there are my best friends for life. We
formed a special kind of bond. I definitely miss it.”
