Siobhán Burke is an Irish artist, from Waterford but currently living in North Cork. She
graduated from Crawford College of Art & Design in 2001, with a B.A. in fine art, painting. She
returned to painting part-time after a long break in 2016 and currently works as both an artist
and an art teacher. She regularly exhibits her work in Ireland. ‘I am very much inspired by the
beautiful wild and atmospheric places found in the Irish landscape and along its coastline. My
work begins on site where I gather visual research to help inform my studio work. Whilst on
location I take lots of photographs and make rough sketches to record whatever visual
elements I feel have moved me that particular day. These elements are usually particular
colour combinations that resonate. Also, textures, patterns and marks found in nature, all
created by the weather, the sea and the changing seasons. I also gather weathered natural
and man-made objects from my visits. Back in the studio these collections help to evoke the
memory and essence of a specific place and time. Back in the studio these visual references
and my memory come together to create a sense of atmosphere and place. I work on both
canvas and paper. Large and small scale. My large scale work is mostly done using layers of
mixed media and oil paint. My smaller pieces are done on paper using any combination of
inks, watercolours, acrylic, collage, and graphite. I work the materials in a way that tries to
mimic nature. This helps to transform the artwork into something that can take the viewer
back to the place where it all started.’
