Ophiocordyceps sinensis is so rare and highly sought after
that there is a saying in China about cordyceps which goes
along the lines of "if you buy it, you don’t eat it and if you
eat it you don’t buy it'' This is because Ophiocordyceps
sinensis can demand as much as US$30,000 per kilo and
thus is usually reserved as gifts during Chinese new year
etc.
For this reason Chinese scientists developed other similar
variants including a fermented type called CS4 and another
slightly different variant called Cordyceps miltaris. This
variant can be easily cultivated, has very similar actions
and constituents to sinensis and is more affordable.
