WCIC (Peoria)
WCIC’s passion is to share the hope found in Jesus… one song, one conversation, one
heart at a time. In 2019, the WCIC community made two concerts possible at area
prisons. The band UNSPOKEN shared music, and the leadsinger, Chad Mattson, shared
his own story and relatable words of hope. Close to 500 men were reminded that they
have value, they are not forgotten, and there is a God who loves them deeply no matter what mistakes they’ve
made. These concerts reached beyond the prisoners, guards, and community to the families of those in prison.
WCIC continued its annual “Marriage Celebration” the weekend before Valentine’s Day with two events that sold
out in 90 minutes. Couples enjoyed an evening out with a catered meal and music from Josh Wilson and his wife,
Becca. Then, Kristin & Danny (Adams) encouraged couples with laughter and honest conversation about married
life that reflected the heart God has for marriage. Throughout the year, WCIC listeners showed God’s love
through “beentippedover.com.” By tipping beyond the normal 20%, listeners brought tears of joy to restaurant
servers across the countrywho were surprised by the unexpected generosity. WCIC helped raise awareness of
local ministries, including Deeper Still, which offers weekend healing retreats for men and women dealing with
loss and guilt after an abortion; In His Hands Orphans Outreach, a ministry committed to creating lasting change
for vulnerable children in communities around the world; and the Adopt-a-Senior organization, which provides
gifts throughout the year to seniors living in long-term care facilities to let them know they are not alone.
WGTS / 91.9 (Washington, D.C.)
WGTS 91.9 strives to make the Washington D.C. area a better place to live and to
lead their listeners one step closer to Christ with each community service project
they create. With a full-time staff of 18 community-minded employees and a team
of volunteers, WGTS 91.9 Hands and Heart community service initiatives served approximately 69,147 individuals
in 2019. Generous WGTS 91.9 listeners provided more than 11,000 cards for mothers experiencing homelessness
who would not receive one on Mother’s Day, a backpack for every foster child in Washington D.C., and more
than 21,000 pairs of socks for those experiencing homelessness in the District. In order to address the special
concerns of their listeners in Washington D.C., WGTS 91.9 provided a free “Forget Your Furlough” comedy
show that was preceded by a food drive for families that were furloughed during January 2019 by the U.S.
government. Feeding those families who were going without paychecks with the 800 pounds of food collected
and providing a night to get away was a top priority, as was pulling together a team of volunteers to pick up the
trash at national monuments when the Park Service was also on furlough. Each Saturday and Sunday morning,
WGTS 91.9’s President and GM Kevin Krueger hosts “Breakaway,” the longest running talk show in the nation’s
capital. Topics have recently included finding hope in the hard places, bulletproof marriages, and shame eating,
among many others.
WHIF / HopeFM (Palakta, FL)
For 24 years, WHIF Hope FM in Palatka, Florida, has been building community.
Besides being an encouraging voice for the Body of Christ, and informing listeners,
the station has become a vital part of a community in great need of hope. Hope
FM’s rural county of 72,000 is one of the poorest in the state. Station volunteers
packed 60 bags of food per week for children at a neighboring elementary school, and also helped with food
drives for a program that supports each school in the county.Hope FM’s summertime school supply drive
generated enough donations to stuff over 300 backpacks with back-to-school essentials that were delivered
to local elementary schools. Teachers distributed them to children that started school without supplies. Hope
FM listeners rallied around local foster families, collecting over 15,000 diapers with a diaper drive to bless them
as they raise this generation of orphans. Holidays for Heroes was a Christmas outreach for former military
veterans in need. More than 300 grateful recipients were given hand-delivered gift bags of essentials. “You
are not forgotten” was the message written in 100 hand-made custom Thanksgiving greeting cards mailed to
inmates at a Florida state prison where two of the station’s DJs regularly visit to deliver devotions in chapel
services. Over 400 runners participated in Trot for Hope, a two-mile fun-run on Thanksgiving morning, which
has become a much-anticipated community-wide event. Hope FM hosted the community Easter Sunrise
Service, as well as a prayer booth and a Christian concert stage at the county fair.
