CASA MAGNIFICA
Originally named for Sister Marguerite Ellard,
CSJ, the first chair of the home economics
department, Casa Marguerita (or Margarita) was
an important part of the new Carondelet Hall
when it opened in 1958. “The Casa” was an
experimental lab for home economics students,
who spent several weeks living in a spacious
apartment complete with a state-of-the-art
kitchen, living room with a fireplace and
ocean-view terraces. Students gained experience
in running a household, budgeting for food
and utilities, cooking, cleaning and entertaining.
In later years, as “Casa Magnifica,” it served as
a themed living experience for students wishing
to live in a Christian community. Since 2005 it
has housed the Mount’s male nursing students.
