FOUNDERS
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJs)
trace their roots to Le Puy, France, where, on
October 15, 1650, six women joined together
in community under the patronage of St. Joseph.
These women broke with the traditional
cloistered living of their time. They dressed in
widow’s garb rather than habits and devoted
themselves to the needs of ordinary people,
in service to their dear neighbors without
distinction. The CSJs have always been trailblazers
by committing themselves to social justice
initiatives and fostering women’s education.
Mount Saint Mary’s welcomes students of all
faiths and backgrounds as they explore their
intellectual and spiritual growth.
