Music@Malling Festival 2023 - Flipbook - Page 2
Welcome to the thirteenth Music@Malling Festival - a series of events
that bring outstanding musicians to historical venues in and around West
Malling, Kent.
The festival runs from 24th - 30th September 2023 and celebrates an
eclectic mix of music old and new! The 400th anniversary of the great
Tudor composer, William Byrd, is celebrated with concerts by Fretwork and
the Marian Consort. The 100th anniversary of György Ligeti includes a
rare performance of Poème Symphonique featuring 100 metronomes and a
concert of Bartók and Ligeti in Malling Abbey with virtuoso instrumentalists
David Juritz and Richard Harwood.
Echo - a collaboration between artist, Sir Anish Kapoor and Brian Elias
- will form a glittering installation in the Great Hall of Ightham Mote
with music performed by 5 specially designed musical boxes. Elias also
features across the programme including the world premiere of piano piece,
Ancestral Voices.
After the great success of Earth, Water, Air and Fire earlier this year,
Deborah Pritchard makes a welcome return to Music@Malling with the UK
premiere of Audivi vocem given by the Marian Consort in the iconic setting
of Malling Abbey.
Beethoven features across the programme with the concluding part of
Adrian Bradbury and Andrew West’s survey of music for Cello and Piano; a
performance of Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge with a brilliant companion piece by
Alfred Schnittke performed by The Smith Quartet and virtuoso pianist Daniel
Grimwood’s journey through the piano sonatas.
Beethoven’s contemporary, Franz Schubert, features in a special concert
of Die Winterreise in the Drawing Room of Ightham Mote given by world
renowned tenor, Mark Padmore CBE. This legendary song cycle composed in
1827 sets texts by Wilhelm Müller, whose direct descendant Beatrice lived in
Ightham Mote in the late 19th Century.
Lizzie Ball and James Pearson make a welcome return in a concert that
explores the life and times of George Gershwin. James Pearson also leads a
concert of Music from The Movies with an all star cast.
There will be something for everybody in this Festival and lots of creative
activities with our ongoing outreach programme.
We are very grateful to all our funders, sponsors, supporters and
volunteers without whom our activities would not be possible. We look
forward to seeing you there for what promises to be a memorable and
inspiring series of events.
