MIT’s Approach to Teaching and Learning
MIT educates students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship with the mission of creating
a better world. Students acquire knowledge and skills, and then apply that knowledge and skill through
hands-on projects. MIT’s motto “Mens et Manus” translates to “Mind and Hand,” and equally emphasizes
scholarship and construction.
“Mens et Manus” or Mind and Hand, provides the foundation of teaching and learning at MIT.
The seal depicts a craftsman at the anvil and a scholar with a book, illustrating both aspects
of the learning process: rigorous study of theory combined with ample opportunities for
hands-on experiences.
The MIT Challenges prompt Nord Anglia students to apply their knowledge of academic subjects to
real-world problems, just like MIT students and researchers. What’s more, the MIT Challenges are
opportunities for students to make mistakes or even fail, rethink their approach, and move forward.
Teachers are empowered to mentor their students through the learning process, and offer feedback to
help students realize their vision.
By participating in the MIT Challenges, Nord Anglia teachers can experience the “Mens et Manus” ethos
with their students. Through the process of completing their own project, students will experience these
aspects of MIT’s approach to teaching and learning:
