Frequently Asked Questions for School Leaders
What expectations does Nord Anglia Education have for my school?
Nord Anglia Education has laid out these expectations for each school participating in the collaboration
with MIT.
1.
2.
3.
4.
Each school will have a School L ead who will oversee the NAE-MIT collaboration, including the
implementation of each year’s three MIT Challenges;
Each school will send one teacher (two if the school is new to the collaboration) to the professional
development at MIT each year. The professional development provides information about the
upcoming year’s MIT Challenges in the form of lectures, group projects, and hands-on workshops;
Each school will implement the year’s three MIT Challenges to as many students as possible.
Additionally, schools have the option to implement the previous years’ MIT Challenges. Over time,
Nord Anglia expects schools to plan their curriculum to allow students to experience the full range of
MIT Challenges during their time at school;
Each school will showcase the student work that results from the MIT Challenges. This could be
physically in a fair or festival, or virtually in the form of a collection of videos, for example.
Does each MIT Challenge need to be undertaken by every student in the school?
Nord Anglia Education expects as many students to participate in each MIT Challenge as possible so that
they can get the full immersive experience of the NAE-MIT collaboration, but each school will have to make
the best decision about who does each project based on their own curriculum and needs.
Are there any set times that each MIT Challenge needs to run or be completed by?
In 2018-19 Nord Anglia Education expects all three STEAM Superhero challenges to be completed during the
course of the year. However, who does each MIT Challenge, and when, should be decided by each school.
In addition to the compulsory STEAM Superhero challenges, MIT created three challenges in 2016 (The
Curiosity Challenges) and three challenges in 2017 (Navigating Tomorrow). These MIT Challenges can be
used by any school, at any time, to meet their curriculum needs.
Is it okay to modify the MIT Challenges to better suit our school?
Each MIT Challenge is open-ended, which gives significant flexibility for each school to adapt them to
meet their own needs. Please see the resources for teachers for more detailed information on each
STEAM Superheroes challenge.
Can MIT provide curriculum to support the MIT Challenges?
MIT provides a binder of information for teachers to be help with the planning and implementation of the MIT
Challenges. This information supplements the hands-on experience that the teachers receive at the NAE-MIT
professional development week each year. Combined, these provide sufficient knowledge and skills for
schools to implement the challenges in a meaningful way which is best suited to their respective contexts. It
is a deliberate choice not to prescribe one singular methodology for implementing the MIT Challenges so as
to empower schools with the flexibility to plan an approach which works best for their staff and students.
