• Awesome Dawson by Chris Gall (2013)
A master inventor whose motto is “Everything can be Used Again,” loves nothing more than
recycling trash and repurposing it into amazing creations. When he creates a machine that is
just meant to do his chores for him that goes rogue, he has to use all his superhero power to
save his town.
• Zapato Power series by Jacqueline Jules and Miguel Benitez (2011)
In the first book, Freddie Ramos Takes Off, Freddie finds a mysterious box that contains a special
pair of shoes that endow him with Zapato Power: super speed. Using his logical mind and new
speedy shoes, he acts as a super protector for his friends.
• The Wild Robot by Peter Brown (2016)
A ship carrying 500 robots sinks during a storm. Only one of the robots, Roz (ROZZUM Unit 7134)
washes ashore on an island inhabited by animals. Roz explores the island and the animals are
fearful that she is there to kill them. Little by little the animals learn to trust her and she “adopts”
a baby gosling and becomes part of the animal community. Her technological knowledge helps
the animals survive a freezing winter, but her robot past causes a threat to her animal friends. The
Wild Robot is a look at when nature and technology collide.
• Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur by Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare (2016)
In this fun comic book series, Luna Lafayette aka Moon Girl is a third grade supergenius who is
fed up with adults running her life, a super boring school and her unchallenging school friends.
She is a carrier of an “inhuman” gene which is only a problem if she comes in contact with the
Terrigen Cloud.
Super Natural
• The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly (2009).
This historical fiction book, inspired by the work of Charles Darwin, tells the story of a young
girl’s interest in animals and the world around her.
• Bone by Bone: Comparing Animal Skeletons by Sara Levine (2013)
A look at some of the differences in the bones of vertebrates is prompted by questions to the
listener. Have you ever wondered what we would look like if we didn’t have any bones? What
kind of animal would you be if we took away your leg bones, but kept your arm bones? A clever
look at how your bones make you the kind of vertebrate you are.
• Tree of Wonder: Many Marvelous Lives of a Rainforest Tree by Kate Messner (2015)
Home to more than a 1000 organisms, the Almendro tree is truly a tree of wonder. Math, nature,
and poetic language combine as the creatures living from roots to nests double on each page.
This books shows the biodiversity and interconnectivity of the natural world.
• Animal Superpowers series published by Powerkids Press (2013)
The six books in this beautifully photographed series highlight the superhero-like powers of animals.
