I am encouraged to see that UCT
has a growing percentage of women
academics and students from
diverse backgrounds in the STEM
programmes: science, technology,
engineering and mathematics. As the
first African woman to earn a PhD
in mathematics education, and as a
researcher with a National Research
Foundation rating, Professor Phakeng

is a role model for other African women
academics. Beyond her inspiring
academic achievements, she has
demonstrated compassion, generosity,
self-sacrifice and innovative thinking to
confront our stale, entrenched societal
norms – qualities that we all can
emulate to help UCT “get to where we
want to be tomorrow”.
